Brighter Futures for Hernand and Joarhy -- Their Mothers

More than 25 percent of Madagascar’s women become first-time mothers in their teen years -- a reality that traps them, and their children, in an inescapable cycle of poverty. As a result, these women and children are particularly vulnerable to poor health, chronic malnutrition and a lack of resources. Through projects like TAIZA -- a Salesian-led family support network -- young, impoverished mothers and their babies can access social services as well as health education and clinics. They can also participate in peer support groups and literacy programs. Young Eliza is one such mother. She is raising her 6-month-old son Hernand without the assistance of his father, who abandoned the pair shortly after Hernand’s birth. And, although Eliza’s family tries to help, their own poverty and daily pressures prevent them from offering much support beyond a bed to sleep in. Fortunately, Eliza first became aware of TAIZA several years ago, after her father’s sudden death and her subsequent descent into despair. “I was depressed; I fled to the streets for escape and did not live a healthy life,” she recalls. “At TAIZA, I learned how beautiful life is. I found real friends and support.” Now, Eliza and Hernand regularly participate in one of TAIZA’s mother-child groups. With the help of her peers and experienced role models, Eliza is learning the skills she needs to properly care for Hernand and to nurture his development. In addition, she and Hernand enjoy free access to health care services and other social support. “I was very unsure of how to be a mother in the beginning,” Eliza says. “I am infinitely grateful for this program, which is giving me and Hernand a fresh start.” Martine, 19, agrees. “The women from TAIZA are always here for us when we need them.”

Similarly abandoned by the father of her child, and unable to return to work due to the responsibilities of raising her 2-month-old daughter, Martine and little Joarhy also attend the mother-child group. Here, she says, she “has learned a lot about hygiene and health issues -- not just for Joarhy, but for me as well.” Programs like TAIZA help improve developmental, educational, and economic outcomes for children and their mothers, and offer a crucial first step toward better lives and opportunities.
