Until recently, faithful residents of Monjurgaon, India, lacked a suitable place to gather for worship and other group events. In addition to major structural issues, the former chapel did not offer enough space to become what the area really needed: a welcoming center where people could come together — the heart of the community.
But thanks to the kindness of generous donors like you, we helped fund the construction of a beautiful multi-functional chapel with plenty of room to accommodate a wide variety of activities. Children now assemble there for catechism classes and youth meetings. Families and other community members gather regularly to attend Mass, pray and discuss critical challenges. They share their hopes for the future and make plans to help their village thrive.
Monjurgaon is located in a remote area of India that is difficult to access. Nestled in the forested foothills of a mountainous region, Monjurgaon is prone to the fury of Mother Nature. Frequent flooding, harsh winter snows and cold – and even destruction caused by rampant wild elephants – fuel the hardships endured by its residents. The new chapel offers much-needed solace from whatever obstacles may arise.
Father Michael Conway, Director of Salesian Missions says, “We are happy to give the community of Monjurgaon funding for a new chapel. The multi-purpose use of the building brings a sense of community to an area that has struggled in the past. Providing children with opportunities to attend youth groups and catechism in the chapel is one way we can build on the Salesian tradition of offering educational and spiritual support for at-risk youth.”
