Sometimes, making a difference begins with the simplest gift. A bicycle, a book, or even a container to carry drinking water can transform and ease daily life for someone who has so little. In South Sudan*, where poverty and humanitarian challenges have left many families struggling to survive, access to everyday, basics can have an impact far beyond their material value.

An overwhelming majority of South Sudan’s population lives on just a few dollars a day, leaving families with few resources to afford even simple items. Years of conflict, displacement, economic decline, and recurring drought have made it increasingly difficult for millions of families to survive.

Thanks to generous partners and supporters, our missionaries are helping to meet these needs. Don Bosco Mission recently received a shipment of goods which were distributed among vulnerable students, teachers, staff and parishioners. Books, bicycles, mattresses, clothing, water bottles, and sanitizing wipes were provided to Salesian communities across South Sudan, helping to improve daily living conditions while supporting the health, education and well-being of those who received them.

“Something we may consider ordinary can be incredibly meaningful to someone else” explains Father Michael Conway, Director of Salesian Missions. “We help provide practical resources that make everyday responsibilities easier while reminding those we serve that people around the world care.”

For Jane, a teacher at Don Bosco Primary School in Gumbo, a new water bottle brought an unexpected improvement to her school day. She previously carried water in an old plastic container that quickly became hot in the sun, making it undrinkable and leaving her dehydrated. It was a daily struggle for her to concentrate during lessons. Now, she can stay properly hydrated throughout the day and has the energy and focus to effectively teach her students. “It may seem like a small thing,” Jane explains, “but for me and the children, it has made a big difference.”

Taban, a former student and now a young security guard at the Don Bosco compound, experienced a similar transformation after receiving a bicycle. Instead of walking long distances watching over the children, he can now cover more ground, respond faster, and conserve energy during demanding shifts.

A water bottle or bicycle may seem ordinary to many of us, but their value looks very different through the eyes of someone who truly needs them. In South Sudan, these gifts are reminders that generosity does not have to be complicated to be meaningful. Sometimes, the right resource in the right hands is enough to make a lasting difference.
