Where a child grows up can have a profound influence on the opportunities available to them. For young people living in poverty with limited resources, having the chance to go to school, develop valuable skills and pursue their ambitions can feel out of reach. Yet their potential is endless. With the right support and opportunities, these children can overcome their circumstances and help address some of the greatest challenges facing our world.
Across South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini, our missionaries are helping youth realize that potential through educational initiatives that combine personal development with environmental sustainability.
For example, the Don Bosco Youth Center in Walkerville, South Africa held the Eco-Ubuntu Green Youth Camp. The three-day event brought together 220 young people and 26 delegates from the three countries for hands-on learning in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, hydroponics and waste management. Participants gained practical skills while discovering how their knowledge and everyday actions can contribute to protecting the environment.
For Zack, a young participant from South Africa, the experience sparked ambitions that extend beyond his own success. Inspired by the renewable energy workshop, Zack shared his dream of becoming an engineer and bringing sustainable energy solutions to his community.
Our missionaries are also expanding access to innovative agricultural education through hydroponics, a method of growing plants without soil that conserves precious water. At the 2026 Eswatini International Trade Fair, students gained firsthand experience with this technology, discovering new ways to grow food while using natural resources more responsibly.
These initiatives have reached more than 18,000 young people across the three countries. More than 200 hydroponic kits have been distributed and 23 systems installed, equipping participants with sustainable food-growing skills they can share with their families and communities.
“These efforts demonstrate what becomes possible when young people are given the chance to learn, lead and contribute,” says Father Michael Conway, Director of Salesian Missions. “Rather than allowing their circumstances to limit their ambitions, our missionaries are helping them develop the knowledge and confidence to create meaningful change.”
When we invest in young people who might otherwise be left behind, the benefits reach far beyond their own lives. We empower a new generation with the tools to protect our planet, strengthen communities, and create a more sustainable world for everyone.
