For years, children in Khallet Taha, a remote village in the South Hebron Hills of the West Bank, faced a difficult challenge before their school day even began. For many families, reaching the nearest classroom required a long journey on foot, making education difficult to access.

Today, that journey has become much shorter. Students now attend classes at a newly opened educational center close to their homes. The school was built through the “Juzoor – A School for Freedom” project, an initiative designed to ensure that young people have access to a safe and welcoming place where they can learn and grow.

Construction moved forward despite the many hardships affecting the region. While uncertainty continued to impact surrounding communities, local families were determined to create better lives for their children. Their perseverance was rewarded with a facility that includes four classrooms, a pre-school area, bathroom facilities, and a courtyard where students can gather, play and build friendships.

For the boys and girls who attend, the new campus offers far more than academic instruction. It provides consistency, security and a sense of belonging. Families can now send their children to school knowing they have access to new academic opportunities without having to endure long and difficult treks each day.

“Education is one of the most powerful tools we have to help young people overcome adversity and prepare for their futures,” explains Father Michael Conway, Director of Salesian Missions. “This new center will transform their school experience and, in turn, their lives.”

Additional services are also planned for the center, including psychological support and pediatric care. These resources will help ensure that students are not only able to learn, but that they are also given the care and encouragement needed to thrive.

This new center stands as a powerful reminder that opportunity can flourish even in the most difficult circumstances. As children fill the classrooms and begin their educational journeys, their entire community looks toward the future with renewed optimism.
