Hope Rises Through the Darkness

Fear, uncertainty and loss are daily realities for millions of people worldwide whose lives have been shattered by the horrors of war. Families are often forced to flee with little more than the clothes on their backs. Children are robbed of their safety and often deprived of access to education. But thanks to the generosity of friends like you, these families have new hope.

In more than 130 countries, our life-changing work supports those who have been displaced. Our Salesian missionaries offer families safe shelter and nutritious food, and provide them with the opportunities they need to overcome challenges in an unfamiliar world. And most importantly, our missionaries give children access to school, where they can learn, thrive and dream of a brighter future.

The effects of this important work can be seen in Lebanon* – a country that has faced immense strain from years of regional conflict, economic instability, and the growing refugee crisis caused by war across neighboring nations. At the Angels of Peace School, our missionaries are working closely with children to provide quality education and vital psycho-social support.

Florina is a 14-year-old student at the school whose life was dramatically changed at a young age. After conflict in the area forced her family to leave their home in Iraq, they sought refuge in Lebanon. Today they wait for the opportunity to permanently resettle abroad.

For families like Florina’s, daily life is filled with uncertainty. Many refugees in Lebanon face limited access to education and employment, leaving them caught between the trauma they escaped from and an unclear future ahead.

Yet even in the midst of these challenges, Florina remains hopeful. With the care she receives from our missionaries, she is continuing her education and striving for a future she once feared would be out of reach.

“Children in war-torn countries hope and pray every day for an opportunity to reach their full potential. Witnessing the work of our missionaries to provide essential education and care to these children is so uplifting,” says Father Michael Conway, Director of Salesian Missions. “It’s because of our compassionate donors that these children’s prayers are being answered. They are not forgotten or abandoned, and their lives are no longer being defined by violence, fear and displacement.”

Education is a gift that restores dignity and creates opportunity. It gives children a place to learn when their world has been disrupted. It provides encouragement and hope as they heal from trauma. For displaced children like Florina, education represents something deeply important — the chance to keep moving forward despite everything they have endured.

Our mission is to respond to the needs of homeless and displaced children and families who are victims of everyday disasters. What’s your mission?
