Educational opportunities are especially difficult to come by for young people living in sub-Saharan Africa. But thanks to a scholarship program funded by our kind donors, 325 students from 18 communities across six West African countries have the chance to change their futures.
Sixteen-year-old Nathan is one of the many deserving students supported by this scholarship program. When his father died, his mother was forced to raise the family on a single income in one of the poorest communities in Africa. Fortunately, Nathan was able to attend St. Jean Bosco School in Cotonou, Benin.
The scholarship gave him the opportunity to go to high school, and now he looks forward to learning a new trade and working for a company. He is determined to succeed, and one day, support his family.
“For a long time, I thought that my school journey would stop due to lack of resources. I didn’t believe I’d be able to continue my studies, let alone attend a professional training program,” explains Nathan.
He adds, “This scholarship has transformed my life. It has given me back hope, confidence and a true direction to follow. I wish to express my deep gratitude to the school and all the partners and benefactors who made this possible.”
The key to a brighter future begins with access to quality education. “This is why we provide scholarships. Young people in desperate situations need to be given the opportunity to attend school and this is one way we can make it happen. Now, Nathan is able to build a better life for himself and can be a role model for other young people to follow in his footsteps,” says Fr. Michael Conway, Director of Salesian Missions.
