Scholarships Empower Young Girls in India

Imagine watching your future slip away simply because the struggles of poverty make education impossible. This is the heartbreaking reality for countless young girls in India, where financial hardship often decides whether a child can stay in school. But now, more girls are remaining in the classroom, continuing their studies, and discovering hope for a better, more secure future.

At the Don Bosco School located in Muniguda, India, 34 girls have received life-changing assistance through scholarships funded by Salesian Missions. In an area where teaching girls is not a priority, our missionaries are working to ensure that access to education is not defined by gender or financial circumstances. Without these scholarships, many would have been forced to leave school entirely. Instead, they are now able to learn in a safe and supportive environment.

Thirteen-year-old Pinki is one of the students who benefited from this assistance. Growing up in a tribal village where many families are forced to survive on meager wages from day labor and small-scale farming, Pinki has faced enormous obstacles in pursuing an education. After the passing of her father, her mother struggled to provide for their family, making it increasingly difficult for her to remain in school. But now, Pinki lives in the safety of a dormitory, where she is rediscovering hope and reclaiming her education, while envisioning a brighter path ahead.

Reflecting on the impact of the scholarship, Pinki shared, “I was frightened before, but today I am more confident. Because of this help, I am able to study and dream about my future.” Pinki hopes to one day become a teacher so she can give other children from poor villages the same opportunity she was given.

“Education has the power to change the course of a child’s life,” says Father Michael Conway, Director of Salesian Missions. “Programs like this give young girls who might otherwise be left behind the opportunity to learn, grow and pursue their dreams. We are deeply grateful for the compassion of our donors, whose generosity is helping provide these students with not only access to education, but also hope.”

Education is more than just lessons learned in the classroom. It creates opportunities where poverty once limited possibilities. Through the dedication of our missionaries and the support of friends like you, children like Pinki now have the real chance for a promising and decent life.
