Responding in a Time of Crisis

Our missionaries at the Salesian Jesus the Adolescent of the Middle East Province are working tirelessly to prepare for the influx of refugees from Palestine, Israel and Lebanon. Conflict in the region has forced displaced families to travel for miles in search of safety for themselves and their loved ones. Children are especially traumatized by the sudden loss of everything they have known. Homes, possessions and memories have all been destroyed in an instant.

Thankfully, our caring Salesian community is working quickly to adapt and respond to constantly changing conditions. The priority is to provide families and children with the essentials they urgently need: warm clothing, nourishing food, clean water, as well as a safe and comfortable place to rest.

With the help of numerous volunteers, our missionaries have transformed former school buildings into makeshift shelters for people to sleep. Inside, the rooms are equipped with mattresses, blankets and humanitarian aid kits.

Father Simon Zakerian, Salesian provincial, explains, “The civilian population is the hardest hit, especially the most vulnerable, such as women and children. Following the attacks, our schools in Palestine, Israel and Lebanon have once again had to close to ensure the safety of our youth.”

Father Michael Conway, Director of Salesian Missions adds, “Some children have experienced traumatic incidents, like blasts in the middle of the night. Some come physically hurt from the conflict. Some are numb … lost inside themselves as they process the devastation of their homes and communities. It is important that we are there to support them and offer hope.”

Salesian missionaries worldwide are mobilizing to deliver supplies where they are needed most. Until the conflict is resolved, we are relying on the generosity of kind and compassionate friends like you to bring hope and support to refugee families in desperate need during these difficult times.

Our mission is to provide safety and essential care for children and families in crisis during times of war, conflict and violence. What’s your mission?
