Bringing Humanitarian Aid (and Hope) to Refugees

How can we not help and support them?” These are the words of Father Cristobal Lopez, Salesian provincial of Mary Help of Christians in Seville, Spain. He refers to the millions of refugees fleeing war, violence and other horrors at home — the men, women and children who journey to other countries seeking a better life.

Their numbers are staggering. An estimated 1.8 million people have fled Syria for Turkey alone.

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. & ROME (Nov. 5. 2015) Salesian missionaries are working to assist refugees arriving in Europe from countries facing violence and unrest, reports Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco headquarted in New Rochelle, N.Y. The nonprofit organization raises money to assist programs run by missionaries in more than 130 countries around the globe. The focus of this work is poor children and vulnerable populations. Special efforts are being mobilized by missionaries in European countries receiving large numbers of refugees.

They’re crammed into the dark recesses of dubious ships like packed sardines. They’ve ransomed their futures to fund a voyage that may fail. And, should they reach the distant shores of a continent ill-equipped to accommodate them, they face a harsh reality: instead of asylum and a better life, they may become trapped in a purgatory of waiting — in refugee camps or “processing facilities,” on train platforms or in a no-man’s land outside closed borders. Ultimately, they may even be turned back.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (June 20, 2015) To mark World Refugee Day 2015, Salesian Missions is proud to highlight programs around the globe that provide life-changing education and support for refugees and internally displaced people in need that were developed by Salesian Missions and funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration. Salesian Missions, headquartered in New Rochelle, NY, is the U.S. Development Arm of the international Salesians of Don Bosco.

Crisis in Mali: Salesian Center Takes in Refugees

Political instability and fears of chaos in Mali have driven more than 300,000 people from their homes. Militant groups from Pakistan are moving in from the north and there’s panic that they will use the region as a platform for drugs and arms trade. They have already begun recruiting youngsters to train as guerrilla fighters.

To make matters worse, a lack of rain has led to drought conditions and a severe shortage of food. Families are suffering enormously and many are at grave risk.
