Giving hope to millions of youth around the globe
SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR (Dec. 22, 2011) – The first-ever World Report on Disabilitieshas recognized the University Don Bosco in San Salvador, El Salvador, for its leadership in prosthetic and orthotics education in Latin America and for providing opportunities for adults and children with disabilities. The 2011 report was produced jointly by the World Health Organization and the World Bank.
El Salvador has the sad title of ‘most violent country in the world’ due to its excessive murder rate and epidemic of crime. In response, the government has implemented ‘zero tolerance’ policies with youth gangs who are at the root of the problem. However, due to a lack of attention to reintegration and education, the violence has not subsided.
The Salesians are empowering the youth of El Salvador to create their own opportunities for success now and later in life. Student input, innovation and involvement over the years have resulted in exceptional programs that are enabling children to overcome poverty and realize their full potential. Salesian partnerships with government-funded facilities are further strengthening the positive impact on young people.
