Collaborating for Care in Ukraine

Amid the ongoing horrors of violence in Ukraine, Salesian missionaries throughout the country continue to provide crucial humanitarian aid—despite meager resources and the very real danger to their own lives. Today, thanks to a new partnership between Salesian Missions and MedShare, these missionaries are able to provide hundreds of internally displaced people with the medical attention they need.

“It’s impossible to understate how desperate this need is,” says Father Gus Baek, director of Salesian Missions. “Every day, the news is filled with reports of innocent civilians being injured by explosions and other acts of violence. At the same time, the healthcare system itself is under constant strain from direct attacks on facilities, disruptions to supply chains, and the overwhelming demands placed on staff. That’s why we are so grateful for this collaboration with MedShare.”

MedShare is a U.S.-based humanitarian aid organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for people, communities and the planet by sourcing and directly delivering surplus medical supplies and equipment to people in need around the world. Thanks to our partnership, MedShare donated a 40-foot container of supplies that recently arrived in Ukraine, and Salesian Missions covered the cost of shipping through extraordinary donor support.

Once the supplies arrived, Salesian missionaries on the ground immediately mobilized to distribute them directly to clinics and ambulances that tend to the sick and injured. These efforts represent just one small example of their comprehensive work both inside Ukraine and in bordering countries, where millions have fled seeking refuge from the conflict.

“The needs are overwhelming, and we are all doing our part,” Fr. Gus says. “With ongoing generosity and prayers from our many friends, we will continue to do everything we can to accompany Ukraine’s people through this crisis.”
