East Timor: Feeding Children … and the Future
At the Salesian elementary, secondary and technical schools in Fatumaca, many children must walk more than 2 hours to get to class. They leave home in the early hours of the morning without any breakfast. Until recently, they would arrive exhausted and unable to focus. But now, the Salesians are providing a nutritious meal every morning — and it’s making a world of difference.
The breakfast program is made possible through a partnership with Stop Hunger Now, the organization that donates the food, and caring friends like you who help fund the transportation, delivery and preparation.
In a country that has endured a decades-long civil war and where 1.1 million people live in extreme poverty, nutrition and education are essential ingredients for a sustainable society and optimistic future.
Since free breakfast was implemented at the Salesian schools, physical appearance and weight gain among students have improved significantly. The overall standard of living and academic performance is up 30%, enrollment has increased 10-35% and graduation rates are approaching 100%.
There is much more to be done; but these success stories are a hopeful sign that underprivileged youth in East Timor can break the cycle of poverty and learn valuable skills that will help rebuild their homeland.
Every gift you make to Salesian Missions helps us educate and feed the poorest, most vulnerable and at-risk children around the globe. Please make our mission your mission. Thank you for whatever you can give today; you can change a life!
