The Gift of Good Health for Those in Desperate Need

While much of Brazil enjoys considerable wealth, the inequalities between rich and poor are staggering. Impoverished children and families living in desolate areas are excluded from society and unable to access the healthcare services available to the rest of the population. But thanks to a collaboration between the Salesian University in Campo Grande and a local hospital, there’s reason for hope.

The two entities recently celebrated the opening of the Medical Specialty Clinic, a new healthcare facility that is already making a dramatic improvement in the wellbeing of impoverished families living nearby.

In addition to providing advanced treatment for the sick and injured, the clinic offers the opportunity for medical students at the Salesian University to receive critical hands-on training by working with patients. The students’ passion for medicine makes a significant impact on public health in this low-income area that previously lacked adequate healthcare.

Educational opportunities for the student doctors are further enhanced by the specialized services that the clinic offers. Advanced medical equipment at the facility enables students to gain skills in many different fields of medicine. For a community health clinic that serves the underprivileged, the cutting-edge technology provides clinic staff with the ability to use the most up-to-date therapeutic devices and interventions to diagnose and treat their patients.

“Many people in this community suffered from health conditions but had nowhere to turn for treatment. Now they can receive the care and attention they desperately need,” says Father Michael Conway, Director of Salesian Missions.

This project is just one example of how our missionaries in underserved communities are finding innovative ways to deliver essential healthcare to those who need it most. Caring friends like you make these programs possible and countless precious lives are saved as a result.
