New School Offers Relief for Children

Thanks to your generosity, the Salesian Sisters in Nigeria are opening a new nursery and primary school in Ikorodu. Having served this impoverished community for many years, the Sisters are deeply attuned to the needs of its people. The absence of a public elementary school for young children, especially girls, is most urgent … making this new school an important step toward building a brighter future.

There are very few schools in Nigeria, most of which are private and require tuition payments that are much too high for the average Nigerian family to afford. This new school, run by the Sisters, will make quality education feasible for approximately 250 children, with preference given to young girls.

“A top priority of the Salesians is to provide educational opportunities – which are essential for community development – to disadvantaged communities,” explains Father Michael Conway, director of Salesian Missions. “We support the Salesian Sisters in their endeavor to ensure impoverished children have access to schools because education is one of the most effective pathways out of poverty.”

Families in Nigeria are desperate to break free from their suffering and despair. According to UNICEF, 64% of households in Nigeria live in poverty, with 32% indicating that their economic situation has worsened over the past year.

When situations are dire, our missionaries are there to help. In Nigeria – and in more than 130 countries around the world – we offer relief to children and families who are most in need. With the support of caring friends like you, we also operate youth centers, feeding programs, and health clinics, as well as provide other resources to ensure that the most vulnerable and forgotten members of society have a chance for a better life.
