Responding to a Destructive Cyclone in Sri Lanka

This past November, Cyclone Ditwah unleashed devastating rains, catastrophic winds, and terrifying landslides across the small nation of Sri Lanka. The destruction caused by the storm has obliterated communities, infrastructure and emergency response systems. Residents have been left suffering, literally picking up pieces of their shattered homes — and lives. But there is hope…

In the midst of the chaos, our Salesian missionaries were on the ground, working tirelessly to support entire communities, bringing relief to those in need, and providing essential supplies to help them recover with a sense of dignity.

Nearly 1.5 million people have been affected, including more than 275,000 children. With more than 640 confirmed deaths and nearly 200 people still missing, the country continues to grieve.

There is still so much work to be done … from building temporary housing and distributing donated food, to ensuring families who have lost everything receive basic necessities.

Salesian parishes, schools, boarding houses and community centers across the country have opened their doors, providing emergency shelter, food, clean water, clothing and hygiene kits. Children, the elderly, and those suffering trauma are the top priority.

With the help of youth groups, parish volunteers, and international partners, our missionaries were able to reach even the most remote communities — victims who might otherwise have been forgotten.

“The Sri Lankan people are going through unimaginable suffering. That’s why our missionaries are opening the doors of every Salesian facility as a place of refuge — where families can find shelter; children and young people can feel protected, and hope can be restored,” explains Father Michael Conway, Director of Salesian Missions.

The road to recovery will be a difficult one for a country that has long suffered from widespread poverty and extreme hardship. But with the continued generosity and support of caring friends like you, our missionaries will be well prepared to make a positive difference in Sri Lanka and other places in the world afflicted by tragedy and adversity.
