As spring arrives, so does our annual Loaves and Fishes campaign—a critical appeal which provides food, clothing, medicine and other essential supplies to thousands of children and families around the globe. For every $1 you can give, we can provide $14 worth of life-changing necessities.

“I can’t emphasize enough the real impact this campaign has on our programs,” says Father Gus Baek, director of Salesian Missions. “Thanks to the strategic partnerships we’ve cultivated with generous humanitarian organizations who donate these supplies, we are able to use the funds we raise through our Loaves and Fishes campaign to get them directly into the hands of people who need them most.”

These partnerships are vital to institutions like the Don Bosco Children and Life Missions (Don Bosco CALM) orphanage and the Don Bosco Primary School in Namugongo, Uganda. Father Elie Nayndwi, who directs both programs, explains “our financial, human and logistic resources are scarce. We face difficulty in feeding children, paying for their school fees, educational supplies, medical assistance and other expenses.”

In the past several years, thanks to an ongoing collaboration with Rise Against Hunger and the generous support from good people like you to our Loaves and Fishes campaign, over 75,000 rice meals were shipped to programs like these. As a result, missionaries were able to reallocate resources and funds to support the students’ other crucial needs.

“We could not do this without the generosity of our many friends,” notes Fr. Gus. “Their support helps us cover the shipping costs and logistics of getting each 40-foot container from Rise Against Hunger’s warehouses to our programs. While our donors may not realize it, their kindness is a true act of mercy.”

Rise Against Hunger and other humanitarian organizations partner with Salesian Missions to help address hunger and poverty around the world by donating nutritious meals and other life-saving items. Salesian Missions ensures that the containers of food and essential goods reach their intended destinations.

“Because our missionaries live and work within the communities they serve, they understand how to navigate roadblocks and get things done,” says Fr. Gus. “This means that the poorest of the poor receive what they need to survive.”
