Computer Literacy Program is Opening New Doors

Jacarezinho is one of the most crowded and dangerous neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Ongoing violence has forced many schools to close, denying children access to an education. It is here, surrounded by the danger and chaos, that our Salesian missionaries operate the Mary Help of Christians Parish and Alberto Monteiro de Carvalho School — safe havens which serve hundreds of students.

At Alberto Monteiro de Carvalho, students have the opportunity to expand their computer knowledge through specialized courses. The program equips young people with valuable skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom.

Many of the youth in the program have never used a computer before, which makes this education even more essential. The courses have become so popular that many students don’t want to leave class at the end of the day. Not only are they learning necessary skills needed for many jobs, but the students also feel safer in the Salesian environment rather than having to navigate through the dangerous streets of the surrounding area.

The program began in 2022 with 45 participants and, three years later, it has grown to accommodate 265 students. When the new school year starts in March, the computer classrooms will be expanded to accommodate an additional 200 youth.

“Computer literacy is essential for young people,” says Father Michael Conway, Director of Salesian Missions. “In today’s digital world, it’s important that our students stay up to date so they can be competitive in the current job market.”

The positive impact of the computer classes is evident in the success of the school’s recent graduates. One former student now has a job with an IT company and credits the course for changing the trajectory of his life. And another young alum has generously donated his first paycheck to help continue the initiative.
