Hope for Children Amid Unrest in Syria
At a time when families are struggling amid turmoil and unrest in Syria*, the Salesian Center in Aleppo is bringing hope, opportunity – and a sense of normalcy. That’s because the Center offers a safe place where children can continue to learn while engaging in recreational activities with their friends.
The situation in Syria has remained unstable for more than a decade, causing anxiety and stress among its citizens, especially the young. But rather than feeling hopeless, kids can escape to the Center to participate in team sports such as basketball, soccer and volleyball, which build confidence, teamwork and friendships. They can also stay active with creative crafts, enriching field trips, and fun-filled summer camps.
Most importantly, youth have the opportunity to enhance their education thanks to support from university students who are qualified to teach and assist them academically. Our missionaries also offer training to high school students so they can mentor younger kids during summer camp activities.
Family involvement is an essential part of the mission at the Salesian Center. Parents and children gather for special meetings to discuss important topics, seek guidance, and take part in educational workshops.
“It’s heartbreaking to imagine the hardships these kids and their families face each and every day with so much violence and uncertainty surrounding them,” explains Father Michael Conway, Director of Salesian Missions. “We want to do everything possible to provide them security, comfort and the ability to lead productive, fulfilling lives.”
Fr. Mike adds, “The Salesian Center in Aleppo is an oasis of education, peace, reconciliation and development for thousands of kids and their families.”
