New School Provides Hope in Zambia
Thanks to funding from Salesian Missions made possible by caring friends like you, the Salesian Sisters in Lusaka, Zambia are wrapping up construction on their new Garden Open Community School. The project promises to bring a wealth of opportunity to children ages 6-18 who live in the most poverty-stricken region of the country.
Zambia is crippled with suffering and despair. A staggering 64% of the total population lives below the poverty line. This means that countless families and youth live in desperately poor conditions, leaving them helpless and unable to overcome their struggles.
For children in Lusaka, the new school represents a fresh start – one that will guide them to a better future. It will be a place they can gather for support, enjoy a healthy meal, and receive an education that will change the course of their lives.
Many of the older students are working as part of the construction crew where they are learning practical job skills while contributing to a valuable community resource. The lasting impact of their hard work and perseverance will endure for generations to come.
Sister Ireen Kapisha explained, “One of the student workers mentioned how excited he was to be working on the project. Not only has he gained experience in bricklaying, but he’s been able to financially support his family with the income he’s earning.”
Garden Open Community School is scheduled to open soon and when it does, the impoverished families of Lusaka will have plenty of reasons to rejoice.
