New Tools for Learning

In a rural country where the vast majority of residents suffer from poverty, Sri Lankan youth have very few chances to pursue a better life. Fortunately, with the support of caring friends like you, Salesian Missions has funded new laptop computers that will help open doors to a much brighter future for young people.

At the Don Bosco Institute of Higher Vocational Education located in the village of Metiyagane, Sri Lanka, our Salesian missionaries are dedicated to providing impoverished students with an education and valuable job skills. Many young people are drawn to the school because of its affordable tuition and generous financial aid.

However, a growing demand for computer competency in the labor market – and limited resources at the Institute – have made it difficult for students to keep up with ever-changing technology. Furthermore, a shortage of computers forced the school to restrict class sizes and turn away deserving youth.

But now the new laptops are boosting excitement, opportunity – and hope – in the community.

“These computers made it possible for the Don Bosco Institute to expand their facilities and accept even more students,” explained Father Michael Conway, Director of Salesian Missions. “And now, they are entering the workforce fully prepared with job-ready skills.”

In addition to computer training, the school also offers a Life and Career Building program. It consists of activities that help students develop skills in teamwork, leadership and problem solving. Ultimately, they will be well equipped to pursue their dreams and serve their communities as responsible members of society.
