Mario was just 10 years old when he ran away from home — desperate to escape his abusive father. Living alone on the streets, the young boy relied on begging and odd jobs in order to pay for his food. He was destined for a life of poverty, drugs and crime … had he not been discovered by social workers and placed in the care of the Salesians.

Seventeen years ago in the Philippines, the Salesians began the Tuloy Foundation with a simple but vital mission: to be a center of excellence in the reintegration of street children into mainstream society through a comprehensive program of caring, healing and teaching.

Today, Mario lives with other former street children at Tuloy’s Namunkura Dorm. He is thriving in a safe and supportive environment where he is receiving a formal education that will help guide him on the path to a brighter future.

The Namunkura Dorm is also home to other at-risk, neglected and orphaned children, including 9-year-old Albert. Until last year, Albert and his siblings were being raised by their sister who was struggling with the overwhelming responsibility.  Now, thankfully, they are all under the loving care of the Salesians at Tuloy.

A 13-year-old boy by the name of Karl is also benefitting from a better life at Namunkura. Growing up, he would stand by helplessly as his father would beat his mother unconscious. The young boy was discovered begging on the streets and was rescued from his abusive household.
