The Everyday Disaster of Unsafe Water
The people of Malawi struggle with thirst, hunger and malnutrition on a daily basis. Add that to the crisis of unsanitary water and the results are devastating … human and livestock illness, crop failure, and potential death. It paints quite a bleak picture. But thanks to caring friends like you, a community in crisis has newfound hope.
Just ask the students at the Don Bosco Technical Institute in Lilongwe, Malawi. A new water system made possible by our Clean Water Initiative has greatly improved the wellbeing of students at the school and the impoverished residents living nearby.
Run by solar power, yet also connected to the main electricity grid, the project ensures a two-fold safety system to keep the water running regardless of weather conditions. That means pure, safe water is available for the community come rain or shine.
Prior to the infrastructure project, a lack of clean water curtailed daily activities and created hardships for children and families in the region. In addition to causing dehydration, it contributed to the spread of illness by creating unsanitary conditions, limiting access to handwashing, and preventing safe food preparation. It also prevented people from properly laundering their clothes or taking baths.
“Through our Clean Water Initiative, safe water has been delivered to the Don Bosco Technical Institute and the surrounding area, bringing great relief and joy to the community,” explains Father Michael Conway, Director of Salesian Missions. “Support from our donors not only enabled us to provide a life-saving resource, it also strengthened our mission in this poverty-stricken area.”
Clean water is a wonderous gift that does so much. It quenches thirst. It helps maintain sanitary kitchen conditions, preventing the spread of cholera at schools. It means healthy livestock essential for nutritious meals. It provides irrigation that keeps crops flourishing and fields green. Simply stated, clean water is key to a healthy community.
