Turning the Page on New Opportunities

Students at the Don Bosco Secondary School in Nkhotakota, Malawi can now access books that were once beyond their reach, thanks to a brand-new library. For this small impoverished community, the library is more than just a collection of books — it’s a gateway to opportunity, knowledge and hope. And it was made possible thanks to caring friends like you.

Before the library was built, Kruza struggled as a C student. Now she has free access to many new books and the ability to spend significant time in the library. As a result, Kruza raised her grade point average to a B … a remarkable achievement in a school where poverty inhibits the ability for children to learn. Her confidence and determination have also risen with her grades.

Kruza’s story is not an isolated case. The library has created opportunities for all students, giving them access to resources never before available. Consequently, students’ grades have greatly improved and their newfound confidence has lifted their spirits. Undoubtedly, the library has been making a big impact by enhancing educational opportunities that will lead disadvantaged youth out of poverty.

“Access to books has truly transformed what our students can achieve,” says Father Michael Conway, director of Salesian Missions. “Thanks to the library and the vast resources which are now available, students will be able to pass the Malawi School Certificate of Education with determination.”

The library construction project has created other positive changes as well. The facility includes a multi-purpose room that can seat 500 people, which enables students to use it as a study hall if needed. They can also spend time there to relax, eat a nutritious meal, and chat with friends in a safe, weather-proof environment.

In a community where very few homes have running water or electricity, the new library makes it possible for residents to gather in large numbers in a comfortable space to discuss issues, share meals, enjoy entertainment, and bond as neighbors. In the short time since opening, it has empowered young people with valuable educational resources and provided new hope that better days lie ahead.
