A Beacon of Hope in a Growing Crisis

Human trafficking is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the world, robbing millions of people of their freedom. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), children now account for nearly 40% of all detected trafficking victims worldwide, with the number of child victims increasing by 31% in recent years. Behind every statistic is a young person whose life has been disrupted by exploitation, abuse and trauma that can last long after they are rescued.

Around the world, our missionaries actively restore what trafficking takes away. Through prevention efforts, emergency shelter, counseling, education, vocational training and family reintegration, they help survivors heal, regain stability, and rebuild their lives with dignity.

At Don Bosco Fambul in Freetown, Sierra Leone, the Girl Shelter Plus program provides a safe haven for underage girls who have survived trafficking, sexual exploitation, and other forms of abuse. Since its founding in 2017, more than 700 girls have entered the shelter, and hundreds of them have been reunited with their families, returned to school, or enrolled in training programs.

In Bolivia, our Salesian missionaries address some of the underlying factors that place young people at risk. In many areas, girls face added challenges due to deeply rooted patriarchal attitudes that limit opportunities and reinforce cycles of poverty and dependence. Through schools, youth programs, and social development initiatives, we are empowering girls and young women to build independent futures.

Our missionaries are also protecting girls in India who have experienced life on the streets. At Don Bosco Prem Seva Sadan in Hyderabad, a new home provides a stable environment where at-risk girls have access to education and skill-development training while escaping the dangers of homelessness and exploitation.

Human trafficking continues to threaten vulnerable youth; however, stories of healing and resilience offer hope. Every young person who finds safety, regains confidence, and begins to believe in their future again is a testament to the power of compassion and support. Together, these transformations are rebuilding broken lives and strengthening entire communities.
