Uruguay

Uruguay ranks low in national poverty on a regional level. The country has a relatively high Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and has seen an extreme drop in poverty since the mid-2000s, with government assistance programs continuing to keep rates stable. About 18.9% of the population is in poverty, per the Multidimensional Poverty Index, assessing poverty as a deficit in four or more areas of housing, employment, education and government services. About 17.5% of households have at least one member without adequate education. In addition, 29.2% of households have at least one informally employed member, and 17.4% of residents have unreliable housing. Salesians have been working with youth in Uruguay for many years, providing educational and social development opportunities to help them break the cycle of poverty and lead productive lives.
