A Haven of Hope
Windows with full panes of glass, doors that open and close, fans that circulate air, and lights that provide a warm glow. Impoverished youth are now benefitting from these improvements at the Mission Hostel in Murshidabad, India – all made possible by your kindness and generosity.
“These kids are from families who migrate across India in search of employment opportunities and a better life,” explains Father Michael Conway, Director of Salesian Missions. “Without our assistance, parents often don’t have the funds to secure stable housing and provide their children with an education.”
Tudu is one of the precious youngsters benefiting from the hostel renovations. He was orphaned after losing his parents in a tragic accident. Initially raised by relatives, Tudu is now in Salesian care where his basic needs are met in a safe environment and where he is thrilled to attend school as a first grader.
Another young person touched by your support is Dev. As a thriving student in the ninth grade, he has made Mission Hostel a main part of his everyday life. Beyond attending classes, Dev also serves during daily Mass in the church, assists in the kitchen, takes care of the younger students, and leads in prayers. He is also very active in sports and participates in nearly all hostel activities.
“We know that the hostel positively impacts the wider community,” adds Fr. Mike. “The improved facilities, such as renovated washrooms and an upgraded dormitory, can now be used for orientations, meetings and other gatherings that bring the community closer together.”
Mission Hostel is an oasis of sorts in a region where almost 44% of the workforce is illiterate and less than 10% of working-age adults have completed a secondary education. That’s why our Salesian missionaries in India are determined to provide a wide range of education and social development programs for the country’s most vulnerable youth. Backed by your contributions, we’re building paths out of poverty and paving the way to brighter futures.
